What is an Adoption Home Study?
Pennsylvania law requires that all applicants to adopt a child must complete a home study by an agency licensed by the state. The home study explores prospective adoptive parents’ readiness to offer a stable home environment to a child. The process also gives applicants the opportunity to ask questions and think through any concerns they may have.
Is JFS-LV licensed to do home studies?
JFS-LV is licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to conduct home studies.
Who participates in the home study?
A licensed JFS-LV social worker will work with you to make the home study comfortable and informative.
What does a home study include?
Some of the areas explored by the home study are:
- Family relationships
- Work history
- Health examination to ascertain physical and mental ability to care for a child
- Criminal and child abuse background checks
- Financial information to insure that the addition of a new family member will not put the adoptive family under economic peril
- Character references
- Personal interviews with a social worker, at least one of which to take place at the prospective adoptive parent’s or parents’ home
- Other areas, where relevant
How long does the home study take?
The home study typically takes from 4 to 8 weeks to complete.
What does a home study cost?
JFS-LV offers a fee competitive with other organizations.
What if, during or after the home study, I decide that adoption is not the right decision for me?
One of the purposes of the home study is to help you explore whether or not adoption is the right decision for you and your family. Participating in a home study does not in any way obligate you to adopt a child
