JFS-LV Board Members in the News
Jay Scherline
Attorney
Jay Scherline received the Human Relations Award from the Allentown
Human Relations Commission. The Commission presents the annual
award to Allentown residents who have helped foster better understanding
and human relations among its citizens by encouraging unity
and
growth
toward a truly integrated society. In addition to serving on
JFS-LV's
Board of Directors, Attorney Scherline has been a Northeast
Pennsylvania Representative and Liason for the Anti-Defamation
League, President
and Director of the Charles Kline Lodge of Bnai Brith, and
Director of the Hispanic-American League of Artists.
Michael Weinstock
Dr.
Michael S. Weinstock was named the first holder of the Auxiliary
of Lehigh Valley Hospital Endowed
Chair in Emergency Medicine. One of the
first emergency medicine physicians in the country thirty
years ago, he is
chair of Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network's Department
of Emergency Medicine. His leadership helped oversee a
hospital-wide initiative that reduced patients‚ average length
of stay in the emergency room and allowed them to be seen sooner.
The
Department of
Emergency Medicine also helped fund research for the Heart
Help for Women program, which educates Lehigh Valley women,
their
families and
regional doctors and nurses on unique issues related to
women's
heart health.
JFS-LV
congratulates Attorney Scherline and Doctor Weinstock.
Aliette
Abo
On
December 22, 2006, youngsters from the Children's Home of Easton
enjoyed a
special day, just for them, through the thoughtfulness of Aliette
Abo and her friend, Kathy DeGrosta. Aliette is a board member of
JFS-LV.
Aliette
and Kathy organized a trip to the new Rave Theater, where the children
saw "The Pursuit of Happiness," followed by
dinner at Pizza D'Oro Restaurant and a basketball game at Lafayette
College. The women also collected donated college sweatshirts and
goodies from Just Born for the youths. The Rave Theater donated tickets
and even brought food to the seated youngsters.
In
an article for the Express-Times, Aliette explained the origin
of her idea: "I went to the movies with my husband and saw a
preview for "Happy Feet," and I wanted to share happiness
with people."
The
happiness she gave the children is something Aliette hopes they
will always remember."I hope they remember the day and do something
nice for someone else, when they have the opportunity to do so," she
says. "We learn in Judaism that saving one person is like saving
the world. I hope these children never stop believing in themselves
and remember that one person can make a difference."
JFS-LV
is fortunate to have Aliette on its board of directors, along with
many
other dedicated people who are improving life in our community.
Tama
Lee Barsky
Jewish
Family Service of the Lehigh Valley is delighted to honor Tama
Lee Barsky as Volunteer of the Year 2006.
Tama
Lee has donated her time, talents and experience to help JFS-LV
in many ways. She
chaired our wedding gown sale in January,
a project
that generated $3,000 to benefit the agency. Twenty gowns have
been sold, and Tama Lee continues to help brides-to-be choose
from among
the beautiful dresses that still remain on sale at JFS-LV. With
a professional background in retail and sales, Tama brings
valuable
expertise and skill to the project. Tama Lee was assisted with
the wedding gown sale by committee members Tama Fogelman,
Aliette Abo,
Alla Kligman, Roz Birnbaum, Sandy Zales, Linda Weiner, and Beverly
Volk.
A
member of JFS-LV’s Board of Directors, Tama Lee
also makes friendly visits to a senior residing in an assisted
living community.
Born
and raised in Hazleton, Tama Lee has always loved working with
and helping people. While in Hazleton,
she was president
of her synagogue’s
sisterhood and volunteered for United Way and the Chamber
of Commerce. She delivered Meals on Wheels and served on
their
board. Now, she
is devoted to her volunteer work for A Perfect Fit for Working
Women, an organization that provides clothing and accessories
to women re-entering
the work force.
Tama
Lee attended Cedar Crest College. She has lived in Philadelphia
as well as Allentown, her present
home. She is the mother
of a son, who is a certified public accountant, and a daughter,
who
is a catering
manager for a hotel and conference center. Tama Lee has
five grandchildren. Her interests include reading, mah-jongg, bridge,
movies, and shopping.
Volunteering
for JFS-LV has been eye-opening for Tama Lee. “Until
I got involved, I didn’t know the scope of what
Jewish Family Service does,” she said. “I
am amazed at all the services the agency offers - adoption,
the food
baskets. These are all wonderful.”
Most
of all, she loves people and enjoys meeting new friends through
her work at JFS-LV. “I am very pleased to be
here,” she
says.
We
are pleased to have Tama Lee and thank her for her dedication and
enthusiasm.
